Native Woodland Hardwood Establishment

The Native Woodland Scheme has been a wonderful addition to the planting program. Native woodland establishments accounts for approximately 40% of the private planting figures annually and of the planting undertaken by Green Belt it represents 42%.

The Native Woodland Scheme is further encouraged with the support of the woodland environmental fund. This fund will add €1,000 per hectare to the land owner from a support company, interested in having an association with the benefits from the forest (but not owning the forest, trees or land).

The Native Woodland Schemes are designed to establish Irish native woodlands, promote woodland creation across the country and to protect Irish native woodlands through the enhancement of the biodiversity value of each site.

There are 2 complementary schemes - Native woodland Creation and Native Woodland Conservation - Both provide funding for the establishment of native woodlands on green field sites as well as conserving pre-existing native woodlands. Minimal disturbance and disruption are key elements of the approach to developing these woodlands and over the long term management, sustainable forestry management practices are employed to ensure it is preserved under close to nature guidelines.

Under the proposed new forestry program, there are attractive grants to cover the establishment of these woodlands and for the landowner, annual premiums of up to €1,103 paid each year for 20 years.

Additionally, we have seen these woodlands benefit in local and rural communities as providing

For most applications to the Forest Service, there is a necessity for an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). These reports address the impacts forestry may have on the environment within a 15km radius of the forest or proposed forest. Green Belt can facilitate this report and submit it to the Forest Service which is likely to expedite your application to approval.
