Climate Resilient Reforestation Pilot scheme
The DAFM has recently an addition to the latest forestry program titled The Climate Resilient Reforestation Pilot scheme. The overall objective of this Scheme is to increase the climate resilience of the national forest estate by increasing the proportion of forest land managed under permanent forest cover using close to nature silviculture. This aligns with one of the three objectives under the Forest Strategy, which looks for the ‘rapid and sustainable expansion of climate resilient and biodiverse forests that support a healthy and high-quality environment’.
Increasing the area of uneven aged forest is consistent with objectives of the EU Forest Strategy and the European Commission’s proposal for a Nature Restoration Law, which include targets for uneven aged forests.
There are 3 elements to the scheme including -
Reforestation for Continuous Cover - PES Premium of €150 per hectare
Reforestation for Native Forests - PES Premium of up to €650 per hectare
Reforestation for Biodiversity and Water - PES Premium of €350 per hectare.
