Forest roads are an essential element to bring timber to the market. Irelands forests are very fragmented with more than 19,000 owners with an average holding of 8 hectares (20 acres). This makes the logistics of extracting timber difficult.
The forest service have a road grant available to aid in the construction of a high quality, long term forest road designed to facilitate the haualge of sawlog timber from forest sites. The grant is designed to cover 80% of construction costs and is paid in two instalments - 90% at the construction phase and the balance when thinning has been partially completed.
