History of Green Belt

Green Belt was originally formed in 1982 by Tim O'Brien and Mossie Ryan.

This was in response to the launch of a European Community forestry grant scheme and the absence of a private professional management company capable of catering for the requirements of a variety of investor types. Since then the company has grown strongly, in line with the upsurge in afforestation in Ireland since the 1980's.

Currently we manage in excessof 300,000 acres of private forestry in Ireland for private clients, investors and pension funds. Green Belt are always at the coal face of forestry promotion, in regular contact with local councillors and TD's to maintain the planting grants and premia which are essential to the contnuance of affrestation in Ireland.

With the vast knowledge gained over the years and our extensive network of professional foresters, Green Belt are ideally placed to provide the optimal return for your plantation. From initial planting to management through to mid rotation harvesting and final clearfell, we are the market leaders and the results for our clients are second to none.

Green Belt have brought that experience to play in other forestry markets, including the UK, Eastern Europe and Central America, and Panama in particular. We have established nearly 2,000 acres of a teak plantation, with a (relatively) short rotation of 18 years. The growth rates are phenomenal and as a result, the ROI for investors is incredible too, with an annual return in the region of 10 - 14% over the lifetime of the plantation. Needless to say, forestry is one of the most secure commodities in todays markets.

More recently Green Belt has actively been expanding and diversifying into new but related sectors.

In a major campaign to open up alternative markets for timber produce coming from the private sector, Green Belt has developed a partnership with Imperative Energy .

Imperative Energy will supply Renewable Energy solutions on a commercial scale, concentrating on Biomass solution, to Irish and UK business and Industry.

It is envisaged that Imperative Energy will create a demand for a minimum 100,000 tons of woodchip per annum, within a 5 year period, which will be harvested by Green Belt from the private estate.
